The Protective Sphere of Zyrcolon

(ooc:  This is from early in Janie's agent days, which were very...  colorful.)

"Your mission is to record Area 12.  Do not touch anything, a later mission will collect resources."

A yawn broke the silence as the 12 recruits watched their Sergeant give orders.

"Agent Malcolm, is there somewhere you'd rather be?"

"No sir."

"One more infraction and you are under review."

"Yes sir.  You've got nothing to worry about."

Janie marched with her team, somewhat proud of her uniform.  She was actually making something of herself- after that spectacular failure earlier this year.  She promised herself that this would be different- she would do only as told.

The journey there was easy- for her anyway.  They traveled using a rift in time and space.  The process left eleven of the recruits queasy and dizzy, with Janie Malcolm, the twelfth, feeling refreshed and calm.  That, her connections, and her test scores were why the Agency kept Janie around.  Somewhere there was supposed to be a brilliant mind, someone who would and could lead the Agency into the next Era.

The grinning young woman was not her, however.  She broke every rule that she could, talked back to her superiors, and was currently smiling at one of the more attractive male recruits.

"AGENT MALCOLM"

"Mmm.  Yes?"  sighed the young agent, her mind clearly on things other than the mission.

"We've arrived.  Please, load your equipment."  The sergeant pointed to the last pile of equipment, which Janie frowned at.

"I don't get a weapon?"

"After last time?  No."

"What's my task?"

"You are the assistant secondary recorder."  Normally, with seasoned Agents, a recorder and an assistant would record the area.  A secondary recorder basically meant that she would stand around and watch, just in case the assistant dropped dead.

"You won't let me hold the mic?"

"The mission is starting.  You have two hours."

"I can hold a mic without-"

"Agent Malcolm.  One more word and you will be filing the paperwork for this mission."

That quieted the agent, and she followed her team to Area 12.  The first four members made sure there were not any dangers in the forested area, and the next four cleared a path and set up the emerency exits.  The last four were the recording team.

They traveled through the already safe forest, to the already safe cabin, where the lead began to scan and catalog the stacks of paper that were strewn everywhere.  The cabin was made of dry wood planks, and contained nothing but a table and chair, stacks of papers and books...  and a blue stone peeking out of a burlap bag.

The stone was a deep cobalt color, with a teal glow coming from inside of it.  Janie could almost hear the humming come from the grapefruit sized gem.  As the team worked, she stared at it.  It drew her in, to the point she unknowingly stood over it.

"It's so shiny."  she said, finally getting the attention of someone.

"Agent Malcolm!  Stand back!"

"I must have it..."

"Clear out team!"  Janie didn't listen, and picked up the stone and bag.  She stared into it for a moment, the teal glow hypnotizing her, until she felt the heat.

The cabin was on fire, the piles of paper burning to cinders.  Her team was gone, and Janie realized that maybe she made a mistake.  Somewhere in the back of her mind she hoped they got away, but right now her focus was on getting out of danger.

So she ran, clutching the stone for dear life.
