He kept holding on to Janie even when they were safely back on the boat, partly to support her and partly because he didn't want to let go.
"No, don't be. It was my fault for wanting to stop at the town ... thank you for bringing us back here. Running to the boat would've been worse."
Parts of his skin were reddened from the sunlight, but he knew from experience that it wouldn't last long.
