Application Prompt - Theatrical Muse #268: The End
The End.
Olivia came to her just as she was about to put on the slip. Ja'nee wanted to ask her how she was still alive and how she found her after so many years of successful hiding. It wasn't fair of them to take her from this life that she formed for herself. Fifteen other travelers, and they still found the need to track her down? The woman wanted to yell obscenities at her superior.
Instead, she stared at the taller and older woman, quickly forming a plan of action.
"Hello Miss Olivia." Ja'nee smiled a bit, curtsying as she had been taught. Olivia looked around the room, taking in the details. A white veil, a designer wedding gown, jewelry, make-up and an old handkerchief were staged around the room.
"Janie, you know the rules." The rules. No marriage, no children. No families. It was the only way to stop the genetic mutations and traits that led to traveling. Janie was supposed to be the youngest, the last in the line of travelers. When they all died, no one would be able to travel in time. History would be safe.
"Rules? So I don't get the cash under Free Parking?" She smiled, hoping that Olivia would leave her to get dressed. This was HER special day. No one would take it from her.
"Don't do this. Just get dressed and come with me. We all love you Janie."
"It's Ja'nee. I haven't traveled since you last saw me and I swear that I won't mess up history. Just let me have my life then I'll come back and help you with all of your big boring books and equations and everything else." The younger woman turned, and started getting dressed again. First, the slip, which was big and cumbersome. It made walking over to get her dress just a bit tricky, but she was able to do it. Next, was the dress. She ran her hand over the beaded fabric, smiling as she remembered the fun filled days of picking it out with her soon to be mother-in-law and her best friend.
When the sudden, brief pain came, she knew that it was Olivia attempting to stop her. It would end here tonight.
This would be her last travel, she realized, as she fell to the floor. She wouldn't get to walk down the aisle, or wear the beautiful dress that cost a month's pay. She wouldn't get to marry her one true love, and spend a romantic week on a sunny beach with him. She wouldn't get to see her son take his first steps or-
Then the colors came, the feeling that she was falling and flying in a million different directions all at the same time, they were the sensations associated with random traveling. Without thinking, she jumped, just like she did all those years ago as a child when she ended up so far in the future.
It was the last leap she would ever make and the last time she would ever travel.
