Revelations

She'd fallen asleep on the couch that night, only after insisting to herself she would go to her hotel room after dinner.

This wasn't the first time Janie had done that, and by now it was accepted that she would spend a few days at Vito's, insisting she would leave right after dinner, or lunch, or breakfast.  She would then leave for a day or two and the process would repeat.  Somehow her disappearances coincided with Vito's shifts.

Tonight, however, she was off just a bit.  That morning she'd seen her boyfriend off to work, and stayed around his apartment that day.  The place was cleaned from top to bottom, her clothes packed neatly away, and takeout was stashed in the fridge for him.

When Vito returned to the apartment, Janie would be asleep on the couch, tossing and turning, in the middle of a nightmare.

She was nowhere to be seen. Not under the cushion, or the couch, or anywhere in his apartment.

But, there was a knock on the door.

"Hang on," Vito said, waiting until his call to Janie dropped to voicemail.

"Yeah,. Janie? That was weird. Call em when you get this."

He got up and opened the door.

"Yeah?" he said, before he looked.

"I left my key." Janie said, standing at the other side of the door. "I'm sorry that I got upset."

She didn't explain how she got on the other side of the door, or what happened a few moments earlier.

"Oh, of course," Vito said, and shook his head. "But how did you get there?"

"What do you mean?" she asked after a few moments "May I come inside, please?"

"I was just talking to ou on the couch. How did you get out here? And yes, of course you can come inside."

Janie headed in, past Vito.

"Heh, oh, that. Well, I'll um. What makes sense to you? Close the door, please."

"What makes sense to me? Getting up and walking instead of just ... spontaneously apparating somewhere." Vito closed the door. "So, what happened?"

"It was a trick, I'm a magician." she said, taking her seat on the couch again. This time Janie had a bottle with her, and poured herself a drink after settling.

"No," Vito said. "Seems like something that you would have mentioned by now. What happened?"

"There's a lot about me that I haven't mentioned." she said, downing her drink as quickly as possible. "And I doubt you would believe any of it. You're smart, what does it seem like happened? I did get your message, and decided to come over instead of calling."

"But I just left that message a second before I opened the door," Vito said. "That doesn't make any sense."

"Is that the only thing about me that doesn't make sense?" asked Janie "I could come out and say that I traveled in time but doubt that you would believe it. That's why I'm asking you to make sense of it, so your mind doesn't explode."

"You travel in time."

Janie just made a little annoyed noise and focused on her now empty glass.

"Nevermind. Just forget anything happened."

"No, I'm just asking for you to clarify that. How do you travel in time?"

"Why do you believe that more than another explanation for a spontaneous disappearance?

"I'm just trying to understand what you're telling me."

"I don't want to have to tell you any of this! We were not supposed to have this conversation."

"Why not?"

Janie shrugged. "There's a lot to this world that you don't know about, that most people would never know. I'm not so great at explaining these things. You've had to notice strange happenings? But to answer your question, it's still something I haven't figured out entirely."

"Is it something you're able to control?"

"Usually."

"But not that time, just now."

"It happens occasionally. Any other questions?"
