Revelations

She'd fallen asleep on the couch that night, only after insisting to herself she would go to her hotel room after dinner.

This wasn't the first time Janie had done that, and by now it was accepted that she would spend a few days at Vito's, insisting she would leave right after dinner, or lunch, or breakfast.  She would then leave for a day or two and the process would repeat.  Somehow her disappearances coincided with Vito's shifts.

Tonight, however, she was off just a bit.  That morning she'd seen her boyfriend off to work, and stayed around his apartment that day.  The place was cleaned from top to bottom, her clothes packed neatly away, and takeout was stashed in the fridge for him.

When Vito returned to the apartment, Janie would be asleep on the couch, tossing and turning, in the middle of a nightmare.

"Yes. Very much so... And yours seems pretty simple."

"I wouldn't have said so before, but ... yeah, I guess it could look that way to you."

"Why do you think yours isn't simple?" she asked "Has Lynn done anything that concerns you? I'm going to tell her that I told you a few things."

"It's not simple because I'm a cop, things get intense and complicated sometimes. Lynn is ... well, she's Lynn."

"That's with anyone, isn't it? Vito, make sure to tell either me or Phoenix if she does anything strange, or that can't be explained. She's at that age and we need to curb any bad behavior before it gets worse."

Vito thought very carefully about his next question before he asked it.

"What sort of strange or unexplainable things should I watch out for? She's a teenaged girl, there's bond to be a little strange and unexplainable in there somewhere."

"Have her eyes, um. Changed? Has she said or done anything to try to get rid of you?"

"I don't think so. Changed, how? Like, sparkly colors or sprouting tentacles?"

"Sometimes they get darker, usually when she's up to no good."

"Okay, I haven't seen that, but if I do, I'll let you know. Anything else I should know?"

"I'm not sure... Is there anything I need to know about you?"

"I snore."

"I have earplugs. I know."

"And I'm related to one of the Five Families. You need another drink?"

"Yes... Five families? I thought that was from movies."

Vito chuckled and poured two fingers of Scotch for both of them. "No, it's very real. Most of the hardcore old guys are either running things out of prison cells or long gone, now, but the organization is still pretty deeply embedded here in the city, and elsewhere."

"Is that why you told your family about where I worked?"

"I had a cousin or two who I thought might take a personal interest in the matter. They're not gonna look the other way when a few punks with a few bucks try to play Scarface on their turf. Calls too much attention to that area, the NYPD gives it a closer look, the fallout hits everybody."

"They're behind the bodies that have been showing up." Janie revealed, having just learned this herself. "I'd suspected it, but needed proof before I could tell you, or before I could make sure you found some evidence"

"Give me what you've got, I'll call you an anonymous source. Should be able to give them a hot time of it, officially and otherwise."

Janie gave him the information she had, and then downed her drink.

"Okay, great." Vito nodded. "I'm sure everyone will want a closer look at what's going on, but that sounds like a very solid lead. Wouldn't want to be those guys."

"Be careful around them." she warned

"I'm not going near them, myself," Vito said with a smirk. "I'm just letting the detective on the case and some heavily-armed mooks know what they did."

"Be careful" she insisted, again "There's something... different about them, I just couldn't tell what."
