Revelations

She'd fallen asleep on the couch that night, only after insisting to herself she would go to her hotel room after dinner.

This wasn't the first time Janie had done that, and by now it was accepted that she would spend a few days at Vito's, insisting she would leave right after dinner, or lunch, or breakfast.  She would then leave for a day or two and the process would repeat.  Somehow her disappearances coincided with Vito's shifts.

Tonight, however, she was off just a bit.  That morning she'd seen her boyfriend off to work, and stayed around his apartment that day.  The place was cleaned from top to bottom, her clothes packed neatly away, and takeout was stashed in the fridge for him.

When Vito returned to the apartment, Janie would be asleep on the couch, tossing and turning, in the middle of a nightmare.

"I'm not going near them, myself," Vito said with a smirk. "I'm just letting the detective on the case and some heavily-armed mooks know what they did."

"Be careful" she insisted, again "There's something... different about them, I just couldn't tell what."

"Different, how?"

"I'm not sure... Oh, don't tell people what I told you? There's rules and things."

"Who would I tell? Who would believe me? I'm not even a hundred percent certain what I believe, right now."

"Alright. Can I have another drink?"

Vito poured her another drink and finished his own.

"So. Now what?"

"You take the check. It's written to you, and is certified funds."

"I don't want or need the check," Vito said. "You told me the truth, which I'm guessing not a lot of other people know."

"Do you want to waste that much money to make a point? It's certified. And Phoenix, Julian and Lynn know. That's it."

"Okay, so I won't bring this up to anyone but them. Got it. And ... okay, I'll take it," Vito said, "but somehow, some way, you're going to get this back."
