Beginnings
Lime coated walls of earth bricks seemed to stretch for miles as they protected the large, white building. Janie didn't think it was a castle, but it sure was big enough to be one.
"This is the compound." the older woman said to an eight year old Janie. "This will be home."
"Is my Daddy in there?" The little girl looked up to the tall woman for an answer, but instead was led into the only door in the wall surrounding the 'compound'. Inside, the earth walls were still covered in whitewash, the halls all long and empty.
"You're to keep your things as neat as possible." The woman began "Anyone who is untidy will be disciplined. You are only to speak when spoken to. Breaking that rule will result in-"
The older woman was tuned out as Janie looked around at all of the white walls, and the fact that nothing was furnished. As the child was led through the compound, she could imagine rows and rows of tin soldiers filling the space, ready to defend against threats. The tour continued, each room seemed to have a purpose and many of them for forbidden.
Finally, she was led to a long room, lined with sixteen double beds. Over the head of the bed was a single shelf carved out of the wall. The older woman led her to the bed furthest away from the door and motioned for the child to have a seat.
"The shelf is for your belongings. The dinner bell will go off soon. Excuse me." With that, the little girl was all alone in the large room, and her new life had just begum.
