In her world, there was no chance for a 9-5 job and a steady place to live. A string of cheap hotel rooms became her home, and her money came however she could get it. Janie grew to think of stealing as a necessity, and using men for money and food as acceptable even though she knew that deep down, it was wrong.
The time traveler woke next to an overweight business man that morning, feeling guilt and disgust over using him the way she had. It didn't stop Janie from retrieving his wallet and claiming the cash he promised her- then whatever was left of the cash.
She almost took his cards when images of her friend invaded her brain. Was he a friend- or...
She didn't want to think about it, and quickly gathered her things, trying and failing to push the vampire out of her mind. They were supposed to dance, then have drinks. She knew they would end up spending hours and hours together and she didn't want him to know this detail of her life. But there was the bruise that the man left on her face, something that would be tricky to explain.
And more guilt, because she knew that there were good things she could be doing with her time.
When the man awoke, Janie would be gone. She would be at her favorite table in a nearby bar, puzzling over her guilt, her feelings for Julian and the fact that she felt responsible for doing the right thing, for protecting and helping those that she could.
And the fact that this extension wouldn't last forever. Raum would claim her again soon, this time nothing would stop it.
