Janie wasn't advertising her Birthday this year.  Instead, she told everyone she was working on rebuilding The Agency.  Which was true, to an extent.  The first group of new recruits helped her clean the headquarters, and get rid of the last few corrupt agents.  She taught them as they cleaned, and already had assignments for this new group.

They were the new Guard.  None of them had full access to the system- just enough to do their jobs.

After a perfect Mother's Day the Time Traveler went back to work, cleaning and securing the large building.  Picking her office which looked out over a field of flowers, searching through applicants for the many jobs that would need to be done...  Things that could keep her busy for a year.

"Admiral."  spoke Tara Yuni, who had just entered the room.  "Permission to speak?"

"Permission granted."

"As the unit leader, I have been tasked with giving you your birthday present.  Happy Birthday, Admiral."  A box wrapped in purple paper, and tied with a gauzy, purple ribbon was placed on her desk.

"Dismissed."  Janie said.

The gift was stashed in a drawer for later, and Janie began to search her office once more for unwanted 'guests'.  Hiding behind a false wall was the body of a very armed Captain.  No, not a body, because a second later, she managed to dodge a laser.

Five seconds and one broken plate glass window later, his body slumped to the ground, and Janie called the unit in to help her clean up.  First the window was replaced by Pyroglass, which was UV-fire-blaster proof, and then they started to clean up.  They were nearly done when Janie got a call.

She shooed the unit out and soon had a guest.  They stayed for hours in the room, catching up with each other and eventually ended up on the desk, and on the floor, and back on the desk, then in the big office chair, until they finally fell asleep in each others arms on the floor.  What a perfect beginning to her birthday.

Later, her gentleman was sent home while Janie went back to work.  Her mind raced, because she'd have to find a way to tell Phoenix what happened.  He would be happy for her, she knew that, and maybe he wouldn't worry so much anymore.  And there was another issue she wanted to work on- but Janie was in denial about it.

Finally when she was finished working, she went to visit him.  Back to Earth for the first time in... months.  She wanted to find her guy- and there he was, standing in a restaurant.

Then wrapping his arms around another woman.  Kissing her.  Stroking her red and wild curls.

The wound was too much for Janie's freshly healed heart, and she ran from the room, letting herself get lost in time while her heart screamed.  Forever and ever until it stopped.

Love wasn't worth it.  It wasn't- why was she even trying?  She knew she had to be alone.  Love consumed Janie, she threw every bit of her being into it.  She wanted a knife, to drive it into her heart and end the pain.

Pills, to put her into an eternal slumber- Janie knew she was overreacting, but she still searched the drawers.

The purple box.  She ripped the paper away, and opened the wooden box to find a bottle of scotch.  It was old, and in a crystal decanter.  They'd spent a lot of money on it.  They wanted to thank her for everything, which made her cry.  Janie didn't feel like she deserved them.  She didn't deserve any of it.

So, the bottle was opened.

And sobriety was now ended, because she drank until she passed out on the floor.
