1. Walk at least two times each day. Start with short walks (10-15 minutes) and walk progressively longer as your stamina recovers and you are able.
2. Use the incentive spirometer at least four times per day as you were doing in the hospital.
3. Take your medications exactly as prescribed.
4. Take a shower each morning and blot your wounds dry.
5. Do not lift anything over ten pounds for six weeks.
6. Do not drive a car until you return to see the surgeon in your follow-up appointment.
7. Do not immerse yourself in water such as a bathtub, swimming pool, or hot tub until after you have seen your surgeon.

Please call your doctor right away to arrange your follow-up appointments if you do not have your appointments scheduled at the time of your discharge.

Also, call your doctor if you have any problems, but most especially if you have a temperature greater than 101.5, if fluid comes through your chest incision, or if any of your surgical incisions become red or swollen.

You may experience any or all of the following problems after the surgery:

1. Lack of appetite.
2. Disruption of your sleeping pattern.
3. Lack of energy.
4. Emotional upset.

The first two problems resolve approximately three to four weeks after the surgery. The most durable problem is lack of energy which takes approximately three months before going away.
