What abilities and skills does your character have?
Janie's hobbies are singing and dancing. Until recently, these were things that she only did when no one else was around.
She's been studying Quantum Mechanics for many years, and is very good in any physics related science.
One other thing- She's a time traveler. She's got a fairly good knowledge of most basic history, but does not always know the details that many of us take as common knowledge. She speaks multiple languages, mostly due to traveling to places and situations where she had no choice but to learn languages other than her native FrenchEnglish.
How do you get these skills/abilities across when roleplaying or writing for said character?
If a song is playing that Janie knows and likes, she'll dance and/or sing along. She has begun to perform publicly, and is fast overcoming her stage-fright.
Quantum Mechanics is actually fun for her to do, so she'll frequently work on a formula to pass time, or read a book on the subject is she has nothing else to do. She frequently compares everyday events to quantum physics (though that is mostly internal)
Janie misses many pop culture items and will frequently seem out of place. She picks up what she can from the people around her, but ask her about Angelina Jolie and she'll draw a blank. Her slang is a mixture of terms from different times, and what she hears others use. Sometimes her speech will lapse into a southern accent, or she'll mutter a word in Yoruba- but usually, she speaks in a nearly American accent and carefully chooses her words as not to stand out. Though she is careful, Janie will refer to food and beverages of different times and cultures.
She gets angry about certain historical facts getting omitted, but usually will not say just why she is upset. The time travel isn't used a lot in RP, but when I write for her in Pre-RP time, the time travel is an everyday part of life.
How well do you think you do at this portrayal? How might you improve?
I'm honestly not sure how I'm doing. I think I'm doing an okay job, but this is a very internal character. She doesn't like to let people know what she's thinking, or what exactly she can do. If anyone has any tips, I'm welcome to hear them.
I'm trying very hard to keep the time travel ability low profile, because that is only a part of who she is.
