"Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal." - From a headstone in Ireland

Sometimes he awoke her with a kiss. She would stay in bed, waiting for the gesture of affection that always made her day better. It didn't come this morning.

He was beside her. When she fell asleep, he was there, his head laying against her chest, the two of them wrapped in each others arms. She laid and waited for that kiss.

"Mom, it's time." The woman turned to the voice. What was one of her children doing in her room at this hour? Time for what? "Mom?" asked the voice, a little softer "Mommy. We need you."

Janie got up, and looked down at her clothing. All black. Ian loved that color- why had she tried to get him to wear brighter things?

"Ian, we should leave. Are you ready?" She turned to where her husband should have been, only to realize he wasn't there. One of her daughters was beside her before she collasped to the ground in tears. They were leading her somewhere.

Now children, grandchildren, relatives- all were talking but none of the words were heard. Why wasn't her husband with her? Her Ian? They could joke about this, and sneak off somewhere together. The kids would understand.

"Ja'nee, you're drinking too much." Ian's voice stood out in her head. Turning, she saw him which almost made her put down the glass. Where had it come from? Why were things always... changing? Somewhere, she knew he wasn't really there.

He was gone. Her one true love, the man she wanted to spend eternity with, was gone. All that was left was his glasses and his metal cane. The drink flew across the room and hit the wall. Shortly afterward the kids were there again. Kids, and friends all gathered but she didn't want them around. The one person that needed to be beside her wasn't there, he would not come back.

Many years later her memories were gone. The children, the life- everything about him was no longer there. Janie was free from the pain that followed her for centuries.

Something, however, still lingered. It wasn't apparent until she saw a tall man dressed in black on a spring day. He leaned on a cane, something about him seemed familiar.

She knew at that moment that she loved whoever he was.
