The past week(Which only seemed like four days to everyone else) had been one of the best of Janie's long life. She'd spent it with her best friend, enjoying the distant, exotic location and staying relaxed the entire time. It was part of a life that she missed, something that she wanted more of.
None of the normal awkwardness was there and she almost felt something when they were together. A part of her nearly called Phoenix up when her thoughts were interrupted.
"Whore." he said. Giovan, actually. The man looked the same as he did the day he met her, the tousled curls still making her heart melt even as he called her a terrible name. "Yeah, you. Whore. Where the hell have you been?"
"Excuse me?" The words came after several moments of shocked silence.
"Where the hell have you been, slut?"
Giovan expected the punch that came, and easily ducked it, a smirk on his face. He'd known the woman long enough that he could anticipate her moves.
"LEAVE." she finally shouted "I told you I didn't want to see you again!"
"Last we talked." he pushed the smaller woman towards the wall "You were begging for me, you dumb goddess bitch. What's changed?"
"I'm not a goddess, damn it. Get off of me." She struggled against him for a moment, until she heard something shatter.
"Mommy?"
"Lynn! It's okay. Go back to Grandpa's." The little girl could clearly tell that not everything was okay. Her mother was pressed against the wall by a stranger, and looked scared.
"Is this the kid? You're right, she is around the same age."
Janie didn't answer, instead she tried to pretend that everything was okay. She didn't want her child affected by her ex.
"You better leave my Mommy alone!"
"I'm your Daddy, kid. She didn't tell you?"
"You are not her father." Janie said, between gritted teeth. "Lynn, sweetie? Can you run and get my blaster? Remember the safety rules, please?"
"Mommy?"
"Lynn, go. Please." The little girl rushed off just as Giovan's hand went around her neck.
"Look, you dirty Goddess. You're going to let me around my kid, and you're going to come back to your job and be happy about it. I'm your new supervisor." Her eyes opened wide in fear as his grip tightened, cutting off her air supply. "Get ready to get on your knees."
After that comment, Janie took one of her knees and used as much force as she could to hit him in the groin. His hands loosened and she finally managed to push him away.
"My daughter is trained in using my blaster. She will shoot you on site. I will shoot you and I'd never work for you again, you racist piece of trash."
"You ain't got a choice. How's it feel to be brought down a few notches?"
"...What?"
"I'm not the only one who feels that way. See you in the morning."
With that, he was gone and she was left to process what just happened.
"Mommy, I have the blaster!" Janie looked down to her daughter and hugged her tightly. "Where'd the man go?"
"Don't tell anyone about him or what just happened, Lynn. We'll go out for ice cream, whatever you want."
"Who was he?"
"No one."
"Was he my Daddy?" Janie didn't want to talk about that with Lynn. She was fairly certain that Giovan was not her father, but still had no explanation as to where the child came from.
"...You don't have a Daddy."
"Kay. Can we get pizza?" Lynn seemed perfectly fine with that, and a little too eager to get the pizza.
"Yes. Let me get a scarf and we can go."
