All of the variables have a spot in the equation, and she carefully places them, writing it all out on a piece of paper.
Then she realizes that some things don't fit. Some can be combined, some are set aside, but all are dealt with in some way before her walk. As Janie walks, she passes the woman huddled in the corner in the ruins of what was once a nice house, then through the small town, to the shore and finally looks out at a nearby island. It's filled with horses and wildlife, something beautiful that holds her attention for hours.
Now she can see the world. The city of New York, with timelines running in and out of it, the council watching it all. She can see the shield that's meant to keep undesirables out, and knows how to get past it. She can see all the places she has lived in all of her lifetimes. Janie wonders for a moment if she is dead, because she feels so detached from everyone and everything.
Suddenly she can see what happened more than a year ago. Lynn at a birthday party, only invited because she gives the best presents and because the other kids were afraid of what would happen if she wasn't invited. Lynn being abandoned by the person who was supposed to watch her, and attacked by a pair of Kaldoans. The old, evil couple wanted to kill and torture Janie and Lynn.
Lynn, who was one of the variables that didn't fit. Janie put her aside again, but could not shake the feeling that she should do something.
Sara was her Mother's sister. The 'normal' child of Ori, who was discarded and forgotten until she was needed to raise Janie. Sara that lived in a cabin by the woods. Janie needed her, so she was back in the equation, which had Lynn hanging there too.
Back at the ruined house, she passed the woman in the corner again who was surrounded with glass from a tantrum gone wrong. It had blown the tiny island between timelines, but not completely enough to be a pocket universe.
She passed the woman again, before she realized it was herself. She'd blown everyone away, then put them where she saw fit. She was mad, broken from centuries of living a cursed life. Janie decided to call the shell in the corner 'the janie'. Someone who didn't exist anymore.
Janie looked at what she had done, and wanted to be dead, for this to be her last moment and to finally fade away into nothingness, where she would never destroy anything again.
Then Lynn returned. Lynn's equation made no sense at all, but she was there. She lifted the janie out of the corner, and cleaned up the little cuts the glass left. She spooned broth into the janie's mouth, and tried coaxing her back. Instead, the roof returned, and the walls and room went back to a previous state. Undamaged. The house returned to how it was.
The island would never be the same again. Janie wouldn't either, as she decided to join the janie once more, and pretend for a while. For Lynn.
"Mommy!" squealed the little girl, embracing her. "Is Sara coming back? Did you kill all of them?"
"No... Lynn. Sara will be back. " It sounded like something the janie would say, didn't it? She wanted to leave the body. So many crushing emotions, none that she wanted to feel. When a picture of... she couldn't remember. A Pack? When she glanced at that picture on the wall, she was overcome by emotions.
"Do you want me to leave? Can I go see Sam and Dad?"
Janie lost it at that question. There was no 'the janie', and in her tantrum she'd probably destroyed more than she ever wanted to destroy. She killed people, some that were innocent. She destroyed part of the city. Memories of sleeping around, hurting those she loved, breaking her own code of honor flooded her. She began to remember her jail sentence, to remember her friends and her pack, her family.
That the thought of losing them destroyed her.
"No. Lynn, stay with me. Don't-" Lynn was over in a split second, embracing her Mother as she cried and released emotions long bottled up. She was finally starting to heal.
