"Do you want to stay here and help them rebuild before we go home?" asked
Janie "I'd planned to call a few teams and help them with rebuilding and
forming an infrastructure. To make this world their own. And set up an
agency base here. I don't know what else, whatever they need. But this
isn't how it should be, and it won't be. They're going to have their world
back... do you still remember, or have the same, um, feelings? I do, so
they must. All that's left is what is real."
"Perhaps we should stay and help, at least until the teams are here …" He felt as if they owed it to these people, even though he wasn't sure whether their help would be welcome. And he was glad that Janie obviously had been thinking the same and had already come up with a plan. A good one, in his opinion.
Her words finally made him stop looking at the ruined town and wandering people, instead he turned around to Janie.
"I do, too", he answered, a little anxiously. "I mean. I do remember and … I do feel the same. So … it was real, wasn't it?"
Julian closed his eyes and returned the kiss, shutting out the ruins and everything else but Janie for a moment.
But the rising sun soon reminded him of their situation and the burning sensation on the exposed parts of his skin made it clear that this illusion was gone, too.
"Oh no..." She said, realizing that the sun was rising. The only thing
that she could do was to teleport Julian to the Rift Raft, but she wasn't
sure that she could do it. Slowing down time earlier had really tapped
into her energy reserves, and the world going back to it's normal time made
her feel uneasy.
Janie held Julian tightly, before teleporting him to her boat. "I'm sorry."
She collapsed against him, relieved that they were both safe and inside the
boat.
"Are you alright? You got hurt, and the sunlight-" Janie forgot what she
was going to say, and closed her eyes for a few seconds. "I can't lose you,
Julian. Not ever."
"I won't go, I promise. It takes more than a few monsters and the sun to change that."
Feeling her collapse, Julian carefully sat down with Janie right where they were standing, and looked at her worriedly, unsure whether it was just exhaustion or something worse.
"The monsters messed with time." Janie began to explain "I could see that,
when I slowed them down. They fed off of our energy. I'm tired, but
there's so much to do."
She leaned against Julian, not wanting to get up. "There's bandages in the
bathroom, just... I need a minute to get them."
"Don't worry about that. You should get some sleep. I'll take care of things for a while."
Julian was relieved that Janie just seemed to suffer from the exhaustion and nothing worse, but she sure needed some rest. He placed an arm under her knees to pick her up gently, then got up a little less gracefully than usual, intending to carry her over to her bunk.
Julian put Janie down on her bed and started spreading the blanket across her.
"Yeah, it will. Along with, uh, a drink. Don't worry about me." He smiled reassuringly, even though he started to feel the results of the past events as well.

She glanced at the sky, and panicked. Any moment now, the sun would rise.

He knew they were running out of time, but still he had to take Janie into his arms and hold her close, right here and now.

Parts of his skin were reddened from the sunlight, but he knew from experience that it wouldn't last long.
