"Oh", Julian muttered, realizing that he had almost forgotten about their plan again. "Of course ... we should do that. You're right. Do you want to leave right away?"
"No. I think it's a monster, anyway. Something that makes us want to stay
here. What else can it be?" said Janie "I've got some weapons, if you're
ready."
"I have a few swords and a couple of guns. I think that's enough, do
you?" Suddenly, she worried that she would fail. "You should stay here, I
wouldn't be able to stand it if something happened to you.
Julian promptly shook his head. "No way I stay here while you're having all the fun. We're going together."
He smiled at her confidently, even though he knew he should worry more. "I'm not exactly good with swords, but I can try ... I prefer the guns, though."
"Don't get hurt." she said, quietly, getting on the boat "Guns! I have
guns, but I said that, didn't I? Take as many as you want, but not too
many, but- well, you won't take more than you can carry. How would you
carry them?"
She looked over at Julian occasionally as she gathered every weapon that
she could find.
"I really like you, and couldn't stand it if that monster hurt you."
"I … make sure to take only as much as I can carry", Julian reassured her despite being a little confused by the advise. He scanned the available guns and chose the one that felt best in his hand. Rather than picking a second one he wouldn't be able to use at the same time, he made sure to gather plenty of ammunition instead.
In the middle of doing so, he glanced at Janie and smiled. "Alright, let's make a deal. You look out for me and I do the same for you, this way no one of us will get hurt. Okay?"
After making sure it was properly locked, Julian tucked the gun below his belt and went over to Janie. He wasn't sure if it was wanted, but he noticed Janie's nervousness and felt the need to reassure her. So he put an arm around her and smiled confidently.
"It'll all be fine, I'm sure. We'll do this thing and everything will work out well, and then we're free to do whatever we want."
"Thank you." she said, quietly. He had done exactly the right thing.
Janie made sure her weapons were locked and loaded, then started walking.
The island was full of happy people, but the closer the pair got to the
center, the quieter and emptier everything got. Eventually, the air became
foggy, and the temperature was cold enough that Janie's breath came out in
white puffs.
Julian shivered, wishing he had thought of taking a thicker jacket with him, but he tried to ignore the cold for now. As their surroundings became quieter, his awareness grew, and when they got closer to the center, he was as alert and tense as ever. The fog made it hard to see even for him, so he focused on odd noises or smells, trying to figure out what might lie ahead of them.
Janie shivered, as she was dressed in a sleeveless top and a pair of
shorts. A breeze began blowing at that exact moment, making the air feel
even colder. The smell of smoke was in the air, the ground vibrated and a
distant growl could be heard.
"Do you still want to do this?" Janie asked, cold and afraid.
"Well... I'd rather go back to the beach with you", he answered quietly. "But somehow I got the feeling that we have to do this if we ever want to leave."
Julian had the gun in his hand now, trying to stay between Janie and their destination. The situation felt so surreal that he needed a moment to focus, and he knew that if they waited any longer, they probably wouldn't dare it at all.
He glanced into the direction where the growl was coming from, and then back at Janie. "It isn’t far now. Shall we go?"
The moment the monster became visible, Julian instantly pointed his gun at it, holding the weapon with both hands to keep it steady. He didn't shoot yet though, instead he tried to figure out what he was seeing and what its weak points might be.
"The eyes." Janie said, quickly "Usually. Most of the time." She sounded
unsure as she stared at the monster, trying to figure out what it was. The
beast was large, with four spiny arms, large teeth, and green eyes.
"I think... that monster feeds off of people. Sometimes energy, sometimes
life. That must be why people want to stay here, so that it has food."
"...I don't know." Janie said, quietly. "All of those people seemed so
happy."
The monster leered at the two of them, almost daring Julian to shoot. "I
make them happy." he growled "They will all wither and die of unhappiness
if you kill me."
Startled, Julian had to readjust his aim as he hadn't really expected an answer from the beast. But now that it had spoken, he couldn't simply shoot and get it over with.
"You're giving them happiness just so you can use them", Julian answered. Suddenly, he remembered his own feelings of happiness he had experienced here and the night he and Janie had spent at the beach, and he almost lost his resolve to leave. He quickly glanced at Janie and back at the monster, then cleared his throat before continuing.
"Let them go. All of us. If you release us now, we will leave in peace and not harm you."
