Julian muttered a curse and made a quick step forward to regain his balance after having caught nothing but thin air. He glanced at Janie over his shoulder and nodded. "Alright, let's try that again."
He had only a vague idea what Janie did to slow down the shapes and how she knew that killing them would end this situation, but he trusted her. As the movement to his right became slower and the shape less blurry, he spun around, took aim and shot in one fluent motion.
The darkness left the shape, and the small monsters fell to the ground,
then exploded into dust.
"You got one!" exclaimed Janie, as the remaining shapes slowed down even
more. "I can keep them this slow for a few more minutes, but I can't stop
them."
Julian didn't even stop to check on the monster, Janie's words were confirmation enough that he didn't have to worry about that one anymore.
He whirled around to face the next shape and shot, missed, shot again, all the time aware that the remaining one was heading for the door now, trying to escape.
Julian briefly glanced at the situation at the door, thankful for Janie's help, then turned his attention back to the shape in front of him. He forced himself to concentrate on aiming properly, then fired again.
The second shape stopped, and turned to dust, much like the first shape
did. All that was left was the third, which was trying hard to get Janie
to move so it could escape.
"I don't know how much longer I can keep it slow, Julian."
Julian wasted no time and ran after Janie, targeting the last monster. As soon as he had a clear aim, he shot - only to find there were no more bullets left in the magazine. Cursing, he dropped his now useless gun and lunged for the shape instead, claws ahead.
Janie was relieved, for just a moment, until she realized that the gun was
out of bullets. She had a gun, but had been concentrating so hard on
slowing the shapes down, that she couldn't use it.
"Julian! Be careful!" she yelled, as he lunged at the shape. It turned
away from her and to him. The darkness surrounding it spread, trying to
make it too dark for Julian to see. "I'm going to slide my gun towards
you, you have to shoot it. I can't because I need to concentrate to keep
it slow."
When she spoke, the shape seemed to move faster as it tried to attack
Julian. When she stopped, it slowed down again.
"Alright!" he shouted back. "Just slow it down, I'll do the rest!"
When the darkness surrounded him, Julian relied on his other senses to know where his enemy was. He reached out and blindly grabbed for the monster with one hand, afraid that it could take the opportunity and flee as long as it was able to move faster.
He tried to fight off the attacks the best he could while he waited for the sound of the gun sliding across the floor.
Janie quickly slid the gun across the floor before slowing the monster down
once more. She concentrated on it as hard as she could, and it got much,
much slower.
"Hurry!" Her abilities were being drained quickly, and she wasn't sure if
she'd be able to keep the monster slow any longer.
Julian dropped to the floor, reached for the gun and caught it, giving the monster enough time to get through his defense and scratch him. He ignored that for now but took the chance Janie had created - he let go of the creature now that it was slow, took aim the best he could without seeing much, and shot.
Julian remained crouching on the floor even after the monster had vanished and the darkness had lifted, and looked around to make sure there weren't any others. He eyed Janie when she was near him and nodded. The scratches were bleeding, but he hardly felt it at the moment.
When Janie mentioned them, Julian looked at the cuts on his arm. They started to hurt now that he had noticed them, but didn't seem deep.
"It's alright, nothing serious." To emphasize that, he got up, picked up his gun and handed Janie hers.
"Shouldn't we have a look around to check if there are more of these things before we leave?" It didn't occur to him yet that sunlight might have become a problem again.
"I think they're gone." Janie said, realizing that she no longer felt at
home. "If I am right, we need to go, before the sun comes up."
She stood, and held a hand out for him "Everything feels different, and we
have been here longer than we think. Those monsters affected time as well
as the reality here."
Janie held Julian's hand, and was very worried. She wanted to get him to
safety, and make sure that he was okay. She also wanted to make sure that
the world was okay.
What bothered her the most is what she and Julian shared, and if he'd feel
the same way about her.
"I don't know how long, I'm tired and can't tell... but we need to get out
of here right now. Do you want me to teleport you, or do you want to run
to the boat?"
He worried about just the same, but standing in the middle of ruins with no idea how the outside world looked like now, he felt they had another problem to solve first. He didn't want to let go of Janie's hand, though.
"I'd like to have a look at the town first, see if anyone needs our help ... can you teleport us there?"
"We only have a few minutes, and then we'll have to go inside so I can take
care of you." Janie said, after a moment. "Hold on. I'm not very good at
this when I'm tired."
She teleported the two of them to the town, which was also full of ruins,
and wandering people.
He held Janie's hand tightly, not solely out of fear for getting lost. When they arrived in the town, he remained close to her, looking around. Even though he had already guessed what would await them here, seeing it for real was a shock, and worst of all was the sight of the formerly so happy people.
"Oh Janie … what will become of them now?" he said quietly, his voice full of sorrow.

She turned away once more, and the dark shapes began to slow down. Julian would be able to see that they were minature monsters, shrouded in darkness.
