Repressed
Sometimes life is such a daze that you don't notice it. You shower and get dressed every morning, follow your daily routines, all without realizing that you still aren't really living. Getting lost in a memory is a welcome escape that's only interrupted by an unexpected sound.
Janie stood in front of the mirror doing just that with a memory stolen from a journal. What had she felt that night of the first reception? Was she excited when-
Someone was behind her, and not the tall and handsome man she'd gone to a reception with. This was someone shorter, pudgier, sliding an arm around her shoulder.
"Where have you been?" he asked, as he leaned in closer. She involuntarily held her breath and stood as still as she could while lips pressed against her cheek and his arm pulled her body closer to his. "I haven't heard from you in months."
"Vacation." It was a simple answer that didn't hint at the bad feelings she had for the man. There was nothing of the shock, anger and heartbreak she felt when finding out about his betrayal- there was nothing at all in her response.
"I've got a week off." He whispered it to her as he turned the woman around to face him, and waited for some response. When there was none, he pulled her so that she was close to his body. One of his arms stroked her back while the other held her tightly. Another kiss went to her cheek, to her lips and there was no explanation as to why she kissed him back, or why she stayed in the kiss when it became more than a peck on the lips.
"Stop." Finally, she said what was on her mind and tried to push the man away. "I can't."
His arm wandered, trying for the reactions he knew her body would have to his touch, a smirk crossing his face when he realized that he was successful. "You want it."
"Giovan- you've got to stop. Please." She pleaded, trying to fight against her body to push him away. When had he become stronger than her?
"Why are you leaving?" He obviously wasn't listening to her or paying attention to her struggling to get away from him. "Come back with me and retract your resignation."
"You." she admitted. He was friends with her boss and that made work and her relationship with him awkward and that was without considering the situation she worked so hard to forget.
"Retract your resignation." He held her tight enough to bruise, and she grew afraid. Giovan would hurt her if she didn't leave with him, Janie was sure of it. "Tell them you were enjoying your vacation too much or use some other believable excuse."
The mission seemed almost too easy. Janie and the rest of the alpha team had been ordered to protect a client and a shipment of a valuable mineral to another continent, something that all of them had done at least a dozen times before. The port was dampened, which meant no teleporting in or out, and the mineral was nearly priceless.
Everything went normally until they got to a remote region of ocean, and the ship capsized. It wasn't an uncommon occurrence which meant the team quickly began working together to prevent the ship from sinking and continue the mission- that is, until everything went wrong.
With horror, Janie watched as her team members were all killed by the carnivorous sea creatures. Their equipment failed all at the same time and no one was able to teleport out. She resigned herself to her fate and let a tentacled arm drag her beneath the waves, wishing she had a chance to say goodbye to a few people.
There was a question, something she agreed to right before death would come for her, then seconds after that she breathed in a deep breath of oxygen and realized she was directly behind her direct supervisor. He turned and looked shocked to see her.
"You. It was all you." she said to him, snapping back to the current time. "You set us up to die." Recognition crossed his face, and his hand went to her throat. "Get away from me."
"They won't believe a word of what you say. I've been in the agency for thirty years-"
"And I've been there for more than three-hundred." Something snapped inside of her that moment and she remembered her strength. Giovan was pushed away, and to the ground under a flurry of blows. "They were my FRIENDS! Some of them had families!"
He tried getting away from her, but there was no way she'd let him now. The blows continued and he weakened, the woman pulling back when a lamp fell over and shattered. "If I ever hear from you or see you again, I'll kill you."
There was a look of disbelief from him before she spoke again. "I never really liked you. You're a disgusting pig and one day you will pay for everything that you've done."
Janie felt a release of something as she spoke to the pathetic man lying on her floor, and was relieved as he disappeared suddenly.
