The Leauge Of Fail

Janie had been back for a few days now, but was nervous about Snake Steele showing up again. She had weapons but feared she wouldn't be fast enough.

His attack came as a complete surprise, and one of her fears came true. All of the bad guys were working together, which would make winning a lot harder. Today, she was at a mostly empty diner, drowning her sorrows in a plate of pie and a glass of chocolate milkshake.

"So do you. The world's gone to crap, hasn't it? After this is over I think I owe you a few drinks."

"Yes. Yes, it has. Do you think it will ever be over? Actually, I think it's safest to drink myself into oblivion now, as long as I still have the chance."

She's nowhere near as good at summoning as the gods and goddesses that she knew, so instead of a bottle of expensive scotch, she summoned a bottle of cheap whiskey and set it in front of Julian.

"Nothing lasts forever"

Julian eyed the bottle, surprised because he didn't know Janie could summon things, too.
"Thank you. And no, nothing does ... but I'm afraid this might not end well."

He was used to cheap whiskey, so he opened the bottle and took a hearty draft, then offered the bottle to Janie.

"That's not what I meant to get you." She'd stick to walking around with things in her pockets. "We have to make it through this, Julian. I'd cheat to make it possible,"

Janie shook her head at the drink, then took a sip from her glass of water.

"We might make it", he confirmed, although he doubted it. "But what about everyone else?"

Julian kept the bottle, assuming Janie wasn't in the mood for drinking or wanted to keep her head clear. Which probably was smarter than his own approach.

"They have to." she said "All of us. There's got to be some miracle where we're all okay in the end."

Janie wanted to drink more than anything, but didn't want to explain to Julian or anyone else why she was abstaining.

"I don't believe in miracles. And we can't just sit around and wait for one to happen. I just ... don't know what to do."

Julian poured more whisky down his throat. It didn't help his frustration, but at least it would calm him down somewhat.

"I don't mean we'd sit around and stuff our faces, I just meant... something has to happen to give us a hand up. The bad guys can't be allowed to win.

Janie looked longingly at the whiskey, and sipped at her water again.

"Except for all of them dropping dead I can't imagine what that miracle would be."

He noticed her look. "You sure?" he asked, indicating the bottle.

That actually made her laugh a little, though she wasn't sure why. It would make her century if that happened.

"Oh gods, I want a drink, but- there's a reason, and I'm not really telling anyone because I don't want to be treated differently."

Hearing Janie laugh made him smile briefly. Too bad they wouldn't be that lucky.

"Huh. Alright, I'm not going to ask, but I won't treat you differently whether you drink with me or not."

Even brief smiles were contagious, and Janie grinned again, before explaining further.

"There's a baby coming." she admitted. "Drinking's not supposed to be good for them."

Julian's smile turned into a more incredulous expression.

"A baby? You mean, you're ... huh. Wow. I mean ... congratulations, Janie." He was genuinely happy for her, but couldn't help thinking about the complications that probably meant.

"That's the look I was worried about." she sighed "And it's why I've been hiding it. Look, I'll be fine, I'm not a delicate flower and I've been holding my own all this time, haven't I?"

"Of course you have, but ..."

He interrupted himself, thinking again about what he wanted to say.
"I'm not going to tell you to stop fighting. I just wish you wouldn't have to."

"I want to fight, I'm used to fighting. There's no way I could step back while this is happening to my friend."

[lostinthefog]

"Thank you. I appreciate that, you know." Both -- Janie's determination and being called a friend.

"Just ... don't put yourself in danger because of me."

[a_time_slip]

"I don't want any special treatment! I'll decide what and how much danger and what for. This doesn't change anything"

Except it did. It's why she wasn't fighting in the war at home. When they found out about her baby, people went into protective mode.

"The baby will be fine, I know at least that much about the future."

"I'm not going to treat you differently. And I would have said the same if I hadn't known. But how can you be sure? You don't know what's going to happen, do you?"

"No, but I know he's a time traveler because he stopped by and asked my favorite color."

[lostinthefog]

"Who did ... you mean your kid?"

[a_time_slip]

"Yes. It couldn't have been anyone else... That means this is all going to work out, doesn't it?"

[lostinthefog]

"I don't know. I mean, I hope that's what it means, but ..."

He shrugged. This time traveling business was certainly confusing to him, and despite knowing people like Janie, he still found it difficult to assume that you could know how things were going to turn out.

"That's what it means". She wasn't sure either, but needed that small glimmer of hope.
