"I don't need a father." Lynn said to Janie, that Thursday evening. The next afternoon her daughter was to spend the weekend with a man that Janie considered her father. "You've already got everyone that we need."
She looked sadly at her daughter before hugging her. "It's for a weekend, sweetheart. If you want to come home at any time, call me and I'll come get you.
Friday went normally and uneventfully, with Janie returning to an empty apartment. The quiet was nice and she planned on ordering in and drinking herself into a coma. She thought of calling her boyfriend for a night of debauchery, but her plans changed when the phone rang.
Lynn's best friend hadn't come home. Janie called her daughter, only to find that she didn't show up at her fathers. She looked for her teleport, which would take her directly to her child and found that it was gone. The backup was also gone.
In her room, some clothes as well as her cash were gone. She'd run away. Talking with the other girls father didn't help to solve anything. All the two of them could figure out was that the girls were probably somewhere together.
Saturday was a day of searching, and of blaming herself, the other parent, and a day of worry. Most of the anger had passed. She could call the police but if they probed past the flimsy false paperwork, she'd be in trouble. When they saw the weapons, they would probably try to have her child taken from her and that would be worse than what she'd already been through.
Sunday, she wandered, searching for the girls. She was lost, empty. Janie never felt that way before, usually she tried to avoid extra time with Lynn. This seemed different because there was no control in the situation.
Monday Janie returned to work, to her life, but unable to concentrate on anything. Finally she asked someone for help, a last desperate measure.
"Mab? Please, I need your help."

Date: 2010-10-19 02:28 am (UTC)She suddenly felt filled with dread, realizing that Mab had no reason to help her, no reason to do anything but yell at her and convince her boss to let her go. But there was no other choice other than to let her daughter remain lost.

Date: 2010-10-19 02:45 am (UTC)Days that seemed like centuries, days that went on and on and terrible thoughts crossed through her mind. She knew her daughter could handle herself, and probably protect the other girl but that didn't ease her mind any.

Date: 2010-10-19 03:02 am (UTC)Janie trailed off, not having realized until now that Bobby was Mab's ex, and that Annika was Mab's former stepchild. Then she realized she didn't care because she needed to get her daughter back.
"Her best friend is Annika. He'd rather go to the cops, but I must have my daughter back. She's all I have in the world."

Date: 2010-10-19 03:35 am (UTC)"So you need me to find them," her voice was harsh, almost angry. Bobby had lost their daughter already. Lost and needed her to find the girl despite saying Annika should live a life without magic. Bastard. "I will find out where they are and tell you."

Date: 2010-10-19 03:48 am (UTC)Janie had chosen to remain ignorant about Mab and Bobby's divorce. She kept to herself as much as possible, and assumed that what happened in other households stayed in other households.

Date: 2010-10-19 03:59 am (UTC)There was a mirror Mab had on her desk that was keyed to certain things and certain people. Annika was still one of those people. Mab hadn't been able to bring herself to use it since she'd left. But there was no other way she knew to get the information faster. Mab stroked the cold glass and watched it frost over. "Annika," she whispered and the frost melted back to show the girls in Seaworld.
Mab put Ja'nee back on the line. "They're looking at killer whales behind glass. My guess would be Seaworld....yes, that's definitely a seaworld employee."

Date: 2010-10-19 06:20 pm (UTC)I called Mab, and she'll find them. I'm on hold right now.
It seemed to take a long time, but she more than anyone knew that personal perception could make time seem longer than it actually was.
Once she knew where the children were, the phone dropped and she jumped out of her chair.
Seaworld She sent, to Bobby, before starting to make the journey there.
